The relationship between water resources utilization and industrial economic growth of 14 cities in Xinjiang in 2005-2006, 2009-2010, 2013-2014 and 2017-2018 was studied by the decoupling theory and a calculation method of matching degree based on the data sequence. The correlation degree between industrial water consumption and GDP in Xinjiang was analyzed, and the results were compared. The results show that using one method to analyze the relationship between indicators may be unreasonable, the actual situation of the region should be considered, then choose an appropriate method. Within the study period, the adaptive situation between per capita water consumption and GDP per capita is good, and the situation of 2013-2014 is the best. There is a significant spatial and temporal difference between the industrial water consumption and industrial GDP matching degree in various regions. The change in the matching degree between the average water consumption of agriculture area and the average GDP generally shows an adaptive-negative adaptation trend. Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Altay Region, and Bayingol Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture are negative adaptation between industrial added value and water consumption. The matching degree between the water consumption of the tertiary industry and the industrial GDP is fluctuant.
