This paper analyses the scouring types occurring at bridge piers and the dynamics triggering mechanism of local scour, summarizes the influencing factors and research methods of scour around a bridge pier, and discusses the difficulty and challenge in investigating local scour and potential future research areas. This review can be a useful reference for scientists and technicians to deal with the scouring issue around bridge pier.
